The Emir of Lafia, Dr Isa Mustapha Agwai, January 27
greeted President Goodluck Jonathan in his palace in Lafia, the capital
of Nasarawa State.
Jonathan paid courtesy visit in the course of his campaign in the state, Servant Media reports.
Numerous senior politicians were present at the meeting, including Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark, and National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Adamu Muazu.
Agwai noted as he spoke to the country leader that power is transient and temporary. Stressing the idea that power is given by God, the Emir said that Jonathan, so as other campaigning candidates, should be guided by this principle only.
The traditional ruler was quoted as saying:
“The forthcoming elections should and it is indeed a lesson for all that leadership is both temporary and transient and that the only enduring and lasting leadership is that of God Almighty from whom all power, authority and majesty derives.
“He alone confers power and leadership on whosoever He wills and at whatsoever time He pleases. This should be the guiding principle as you (Jonathan) and other aspirants criss-cross the length and breadth of our nation canvassing for the mandate to lead. We do not have any doubt, however, that the key political actors have come to terms with this reality with the recent signing of peace pact in Abuja.”
Apart from than, Agwai recalled the basics of democracy stating that the will of people is the highest priority for the government and that the authorities should derive the mandate only from the people.
The Emir thanked the acting government for having established the Federal University, Lafia, for having launched the construction of the Federal Secretariat and for several other big projects started in the capital of the state.
Regarding Nasarawa governor, Umar Tanko Almakura, the monarch said:
“Permit me at this juncture Mr. President to pledge our alloyed and absolute loyalty to the Federal Government as admonished and encouraged by our amiable governor, Umar Tanko Almakura.”
President Jonathan, on his part, assured the Emir that his government would continue supporting the state for it to reach higher level of prosperity.
It should be recalled that during the January 26 rally in Jos, Plateau State, Jonathan called the PDP the only truly democratic party as it “has no owner; it is a democratic group with no landlord and tenant.”
In his address to Nasarawa people, GEJ also claimed it was important to united in order to fight and solve Nigeria’s problems.
