Governor of Ekiti state, Mr Ayo Fayose, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the February 14 presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan, will defeat the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Muhammadu Buhari convincingly.
He also declared that APC will not win any seat in the state and National Assembly elections in the state. According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Idowu Adelusi, on Saturday, Fayose spoke while receiving a team of American diplomats in his office. The American diplomats were led by the United States Consular General in Lagos, Mr Jeffrey Hawkins.
Fayose stated that the state witnessed a peaceful poll last year during the governorship election, and expressed optimism that the standard would not be lower. According to fayose, Jonathan will defeat Buhari because Nigeria is safe with him (Jonathan). On the controversial adverts he placed in two newspapers last month, Fayose said it was not a death wish but meant “to appeal to sense of reasoning to prevent episode of 2010 when the National Assembly had to invoke Doctrine of Necessity.” He reiterated that he has no apology for sponsoring the advert, adding that it was his personal opinion and not that of his party, PDP. In his remarks, Hawkins said the unity of Nigeria should be the most important factor in the back of the minds of politicians.
He also decried the tension in the polity, saying elections should not be seen as war or do-or-die. He, however, stated that the United States was interested in smooth transition and election in Nigeria.
