Every couple in a relationship knows the difficulties in maintaining intimacy on a long-term basis.

While sex may be one of the ways to be closer to your partner more than anything else, a relationship CAN actually survive without it.

Here are 5 things you can share to avoid losing sight of the bond that you've built together.

  1. Mind over money: You know the old saying, "Money doesn't buy happiness"? Well, it's true. Spending money on gifts, from economical to extravagant, isn't necessary for happiness. Women, especially, can deeply appreciate a wonderful day spent in the park or at the beach or a walk around the nieghbourhood - anything that gives the idyllic memory to fondly daydream about.

  2. Vroom vroom: Husbands - want to make your wives' engines really rev? Turn on the vacuum...or washing machine...or load the dishwasher, or pack school snacks for the next day. Wives and mothers, in particular, often let their roles as "Mom" and "caretaker" overshadow their role as life partner and lover. It's so easy to get lost and overwhelmed in the planning and running of daily life that either spouse needs to be reminded they are appreciated.

  3. Penny for your thoughts: "I saw this pack of mints at the store and it reminded me of the day we met, so I bought them." The tiniest of gestures show you care, and make your spouse go ga-ga over you. The way to a man's heart may be through his stomach, but the way to a woman's heart is through her brain - show your sensitive side with a home-cooked feast or another kind gesture and your spouse will melt!

  4. Yes, dear: Avoid falling into the "Yes, dear" trap at all costs! Human beings crave being listened to, and this timeworn phrase is the ultimate go-to by any partner who just wishes to appease their spouse, and sounds very dismissive.

  5. In for a Penny, in for a Pound: TV, movies, and nearly every magazine out there aim to "help" with splashy statements about how to reach the "ideal" body size. True, most are aimed at women with tips on 'how to lose that baby weight', but men are equally targeted with messages about eliminating a beer belly, and magazine covers are not known for untouched photos with everyday people. While there are some who simply embrace who they are, inside and out, the barrage of vanity messaging more easily impacts the more self- conscious. Showing your love that you love them no matter what is most important.
