Condoms are one of the most well known sexual health
products. If you are sexually active, the best thing you can do for
yourself and your partner is use a condom.
Condoms give you protection from STDs, STIs and unplanned pregnancies. In one form or the other, condoms have been around for a very long time. There are documented accounts of condoms from the 15th century and speculations of condom use as far back as 150 AD.
Predecessors to the modern condom were made with a variety of materials; linen, silk, animal membranes (bladders or intestines), leather, animal horn or tortoise shell! Despite how uncomfortable ancient condoms sound to us today, they were quite popular in their day and only the upper class could afford to use them. The majority of condoms we use today are made of latex which is produced by suspension of rubber in water. Condoms made from lamb skin are also available on the market. When used correctly, scientific research shows that condoms are 97% effective for STDs and birth control. Even allowing for incorrect use, in 84% of cases condom effectiveness still holds.
Recently a non-profit organisation, Society for Family Health (SFH), launched a new condom called, Gold Circle Flex®. SFH has been providing condoms to Nigerians for over twenty years. The team from SFH had a few fun facts about condoms and Gold Circle Flex® to share with us;
• Gold Circle Flex® is strawberry flavored. Perhaps because it is shaped like a ni pple, many people consider strawberries an aphrodisiac and visually highly ero tic!
• Surveys have shown that women are as likely to experience orgasm with or without a condom.
• The best place to store condoms is in a cool dry place such as in a drawer. Guys, your wallet is not an ideal place to store condoms!
• The largest company manufacturing condoms in the world has its headquarters in Malaysia. Gold Circle Flex® is manufactured in neighboring Thailand.
• Studies show that single, sexually active men often use certain tactics to avoid using a condom during intercourse. The most common tactics are: reassuring her that he is ‘clean’ (even though he has not been tested for any STD or STI!) and getting her so excited that she agrees to have se x without a condom!
• Wearing two condoms at once does not increase protection. If you use two condoms at once the friction between the two increases the possibility of tearing the condom.
• During World War 1 condoms were not provided, neither was their use promoted to soldiers in the armies of the United States of America and Britain in Europe. By the end of the war, the American military had diagnosed almost 400,000 cases of syphilis and gonorrhea, an unprecedentedly high number of cases.
Whether for procreational or recreational purposes, it would be an exercise in futility to ask or expect people to stop having se x. In the past, the result of having se x without condoms was the possibility of contracting any of several very irritating, but basically not life-threatening STDs. With the advent of HIV however, the decision to have se x with or without protection has become a potentially deadly one. SFH’s Gold Circle Flex® is designed both for your health and for your pleasure.
