Bucket toilets are the legacy of the apartheid government which gave black township dwellers bucket toilets instead of conventional flushing toilets similar to those of white surburbian homes.
Since the demise of apartheid, the new government had implemented a programme aimed to replace the bucket system in informal settlements by 2007.
