A mother and daughter enjoying a quiet late-night dinner in Manhattan were viciously attacked by a group of drunken patrons shouting anti-gay slurs after the pair were mistaken for a lesbian couple.
Tiffany Santiago, 27, from Astoria, Queens, was left with six stitches to her knee in the aftermath of the assault that took place September 12 at BarKogi on the East Side.
According to Ms Santiago, a veterinary technician at ASPCA, she and her youthful 46-year-old
mother were attacked at around 1am at the Korean barbecue hotspot by two women and a man who were seated at a nearby table.
‘Me and my mom look very similar in age, and so I think me with the short hair, and my mom’s really tall… I think they thought we were on a date,’ the younger woman told CBS New York last week.
According to Ms Santiago, the altercation began with the belligerent patrons hurling anti-gay epithets at them, repeatedly calling them 'lesbian' and throwing things at them, including lemon wedges and balled up napkins.
Santiago's mother, who has not been publicly named, confronted the rude diners, telling them her companion was, in fact, her daughter. Before long, Santiago said their assailants began pushing them and the violence quickly escalated to an all-out melee.
According to the 27-year-old woman, the man in the group, who appeared drunk, threw her across the room, leaving her with a bleeding wound on her left knee. Meanwhile, his female companions lunged at her mother, getting on top of her and punching her in the arm.
The older woman suffered lacerations and scrapes in the fracas but chose not to seek medical treatment. By the time police arrived on the scene, the drunken trio had fled the restaurant. The NYPD later released a surveillance video from the East Side eatery showing the three suspects.
On Wednesday, police also put out composite sketches of two of the accused attackers: a balding man and a blonde woman.
