Preparations for the 11th edition of Calabar Festival entered a new level, December 25, with the arrival of the Vai Vai Samba band of Brazil.
The Brazilian band is among the 15 foreign bands participating in this year’s Canival Calabar which over the years has been described as African’s biggest street party.
The team who were decked in yellow T-shirts with the inscription “Terra Da Garoa Sao Paulp Brazil” said on arrival at the Margaret Ekpo International airport that they have come to stay. Expressing optimism about this year’s edition of the carnival, the team leader Tobiasz Da Silva as well as one of the queens, Leticia, said they were proud to be part of it.
“Brazil is back for 2015 biggest street party in the whole of Africa and we look forward to a wonderful carnival like never before and it is going to take a new dimension completely,” the duo said.

They also added that Vai Vai Samba band remains special and declared: “this time around, Brazil has come to stay”.
Lauding the governor of Cross River state, Ben Ayade for “his vision and effort to take the carnival a notch higher, the team leader urged that the feat be sustained over time.
However, the Samba queens gave a clue of what they have on offer as they took time to showcase their Brazilian stuff to the rhythm of a Brass band on hand to welcome them into the state. The carnival which is in its 11th year has evolved with the addition of new events with over ten countries confirming participation in the global fiesta.
Meanwhile, the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade has vowed to commit himself to eradicating or at least reducing to the barest minimum, the scourge of unemployment in the state by the end of his first tenure in office.
The governor promised that only policies which will create jobs are prioritized by his administration.
