A jilted lover in Kisii County poured concentrated sulphuric acid on his girlfriend after she dumped him. The 22 year Gusii Institute student is said to have called off the relationship after learning they were related.
Rebecca is reported to have been attacked, together with a cousin, when they were preparing a meal for the family. He stormed the kitchen and poured the acid on both of them before fleeing the crime scene. Rebecca, whose burns were severe, is recuperating at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital while the cousin is admitted at Kisii Level 6 Hospital. The boyfriend had the temerity to even brag about his escapade to friends.
One of the villagers elders, Mr Geoffrey Ong’era, was quoted as saying:
“Rebecca discovered that they were related and decided to end the relationship since they could not get married. However Onchari could not accept that reality which prompted him to carry out the cruel act,” Ong’era said.

The police nabbed the culprit who his in their custody and the area chief, Mr James Nyakono, said that investigations are being conducted to establish the source of the acid.
